CHATEAU CANTEMERLE
CHATEAU CANTEMERLE, HAUT-MÉDOC, GRAND CRU CLASSÉ EN 1855.
Located in the communes of Macau and Ludon, Château Cantemerle, designated a great growth in the famous 1855 classification, has deep fine gravel soil. Thanks to its unique terroir, Cantemerle produces complex, well-balanced, and refined wines.
After belonging to the Villeneuve (1576-1892) and Dubos (1892-1980) families, the château was acquired in 1981 by the SMABTP, a large mutual insurance company in the construction and civil engineering sector. The estate’s long history is reflected in the château’s distinctive architecture and the magnificent grounds that surround it. Cantemerle exudes romantic charm, and the vineyard has magical feel to it.
Attractive even when quite young, the wine is rich, powerful, and smooth. It is made by an experienced and enthusiastic team using a careful blend of traditional and state-of-the-art techniques.
Vineyard, Terroir, and Winemaking:
The huge 108-hectare vineyard of Cantemerle has 92 hectares under vine, planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. On average, the vines are close to 30 years of age. They have old Cabernet vines, which are close to 70 years of age. The terroir is mostly sand and gravel soils.
To produce the wine of Chateau Cantemerle, Malolactic fermentation takes place in vat. The young vines are always vinified in stainless steel vats. The wine is aged in 40% to 50% new French oak barrels for between 12 to 16 months, depending on the vintage. There is a second wine, Les Allees de Cantemerle.
