2023 BORDEAUX EN PRIMEUR

Bordeaux Futures offers aficionados an opportunity to secure wines of a specific vintage from the most esteemed wine region, even before the wines are produced and released into the market. Leading merchants and wine experts travel to Bordeaux's Grand Chateaux for a rigorous week of barrel tastings of the latest vintage. A one-of-a-kind event that dates back in time, where the wines are still developing their characteristics in exquisite French oak barrels while collectors may yet acquire the bottles they desire, at the best price compared to when they are released.

A notably warmer vintage on record, the Bordeaux 2023 exemplifies the real characteristics of ripe, restrained fruit and lower alcohol levels. The fine 2023 vintage has seen a price drop of 30% or more compared to the 2022 vintage, which has helped flatten the price curve and provided much-needed alleviation in the current state of the economy. Rather than being a reflection of the wines' quality, this reduction is more of an attempt to reset prices at a point where they would be appealing to buyers and help struggling négociants. With nearly perfect ratings from wine experts and attractive prices to a classic style, making Bordeaux 2023 wines a great investment now more than ever.

Bordeaux's 2023 vintage has once again produced an array of wines unparalleled in quality, with the greatest examples showcasing intense fruit, vibrant aromas, and harmonious yet balanced that truly embody the terroir of a "Classic Bordeaux." It is more in line with 2019 and 2015 in terms of quality. The 2023 vintage began early, with budbreak occurring in mid to late March. Spring brought warm and rainy weather, making things challenging for certain producers. Due to these tropical conditions developing, by June wine growers were nervous about the downy mildew, also leading to a fractional loss of crop. July continued with moderate temperatures, and by the beginning of August veraison had been completed. The weather underwent a dramatic shift by the middle of August, and the temperature started to increase, which was precisely what was required. Another heat wave occurred in September, which played a significant role in accelerating the ripening process of the grapes. Followed by picking that lasted until mid- October. Despite its fair share of difficulties, 2023 was nevertheless able to yield some delicious wines with a natural lift and rich, fragrant flavors, demonstrating a great vintage. In 2023 En Premier vintage, Merlot remains excellent, but its supply is limited. Nevertheless, the left Bank Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon have both surpassed expectations.
