Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars has captivated wine lovers worldwide since the 1970s with their elegant and expressive wines reflecting the region's unique terroir. Whether you are visiting their vineyard or purchasing a bottle from their carefully curated selection, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars captivates audiences with their award-winning wines and rich history.

Inspired by the potential of the Stags Leap District

Located within the Napa Valley AVA, 6 miles north of Napa, California, The Stags Leap District was the first area designated an AVA (American Viticultural Area) based on the unique terroir characteristics of its soil. Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, not to be confused with Stags’ Leap, has been operating since the 1970s. The Stags Leap District is characterized by its volcanic soils, steep slopes, and cooling influence from the San Pablo Bay nearby. These factors combine to create an ideal microclimate for growing, grapes-particularly Cabernet Sauvignon. The results are that wines from this region display distinct elegance and age-worthiness.

A story of vision and perseverance

Founded in 1970 by Warren Winiarski, Winiarski envisioned producing world-class wines that would rival established wineries worldwide. His vision to create wines showcasing the terroir's distinct character and elegance and his relentless pursuit of excellence laid the foundation for what would become one of Napa Valley’s most iconic wineries.

The Judgement of Paris

The turning point for Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars came in 1976, during a blind-tasting event now known as the “Judgement of Paris.” This historic event pitted French wines against up-and-coming Californian wines in a blind-tasting competition. To the amazement and astonishment of the wine world, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars’ 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon outshined renowned Bordeaux wines and emerged victorious, putting California on the global wine map.
