Clearly a bigger and more structured wine than the 2014, this has blackberry and fig notes along with a lick of minerality, suggested by both the texture and the gunsmoke edge to the finish. It’s enjoyable and approachable, although still young. The alcohol levels are high in 2015, but the St-Emilion plateau is a relatively forgiving spot for generous alcohols because there’s a natural minerality and freshness from the limestone. 30% new oak. Vigna Colonnello is ruby red with garnet hues. The nose is intense and well-balanced with notes of blueberries, raspberries and currants accompanied by balsamic hints, impressions of Mediterranean scrub and floral notes of dried roses. The well-balanced palate has a powerful and fine tannic texture while at the same time expresses great elegance. The finish is long and complex.

Located in the heart of the Anderson Valley, our Gowan Creek Vineyard features a unique terroir with elements from the valley’s warmer regions and its cooler, northern “deep end.” Offering an ideal southwestern exposure, and an array of unique vineyard blocks planted with clones of Pinot Noir carefully tailored to each site and soil type. The expressive wine produced from these vines displays beautiful inky depth and robust untamed fruit flavors.

A "Goldilocks wine" where everything, down to the restrained alcohol, is just right. Since 2002 the vineyards have been managed organically and biodynamically. In 2010 all four vineyards were awarded full Demeter certification and in 2020 they were all also certified by BioGro. Pruning is carried out to leave desired bud numbers thus ensuring moderate controllable yields and to create an even, light penetrable canopy. Irrigation is usually necessary during the later dry summer months. Soil moisture levels are carefully monitored and water is applied only when necessary to maintain appropriate soil moisture levels. All grapes are carefully hand picked, keeping separate any quality differences within blocks due to clones, rootstocks and viticultural trials.

They decided to plant a vineyard in a place in Australia not yet universally recognised as a major viticultural area but one that Julian believed would be perfect for Syrah. Julian also believed that Italian varieties had great potential in the same place, so Sangiovese was also a possibility. Thus Syrah was planted, and later Sangiovese. 
Un Segreto (Secret in Italian) is a blend of 60% Sangiovese and 40% Syrah. It has and intense nose of blackberries, plums, and dark cherries, with hints of tobacco and earthiness. The flavours are rich and concentrated and include blackberries and blackcurrants, with notes of dark chocolate and spices.

Deep, dark, opaque purple-black color holds well to a vivid purple rim & stains the glass when swirled. The aromas are of concentrated dark-fruit. Concentrated fruit on the palate has a tight graphite nature at its core, but is lifted by good freshness. The tannins are fine, but a little drying. Alcohol seems balanced by the fruit. Lovely, juicy blackcurrant fruit emerges from the graphite on the finish – which has fair length.

The aromas are forward, with notes of dark raspberry, fruit rollup, cedar, tar, dark plum and a whiff of mesquite smoke. The flavors are palate coating, showing depth, intensity and impressive freshness, with tart acidity. There's plenty of tannic structure around it all. It's beautiful. Sean P. Sullivan
