Savory and floral notes supported by clean veins of salinity extend the persistent finish. Pavie Macquin shows what was possible in 2024. The choice to harvest everything in October (from the 3rd to the 8th) paid off big time. Aging is in French oak, with about 15% in larger 500-liter barrels, 45% new wood overall. Tasted three times.”

The Cabernet Sauvignon is quite high at 87%, but it is really the wine's balance that speaks loudest. Here, too, the reduction of new oak to 70% really helps the wine speak with precision.”

“The 2024 Haut-Bailly was picked from September 25 to October 4 and matured in 50% new oak, possibly with a shorter élevage. As usual, it deserves patience at this stage as it gradually opens and coheres with aeration. This has a perfumed bouquet built around redcurrant, cranberry and wild strawberry fruit. It's quite floral in style with finely delineated touches of freshly-rolled tobacco and wilted rose petal. The palate is creamy on the entry and velvety in texture, with finely chiseled, lace-like tannins. It is very well balanced with one of the few sensual vintages that you will find from this year. This will be much earlier drinking than other vintages, but that does not detract from what will be one of the most pleasurable 2024s to drink.”

The Lochlea Ploughing Edition First Crop whisky features a nose of baked fruit with a subtle background of peat smoke. The palate offers notes of cooked apples, Brazil nuts, and a light, persistent peat smoke. The finish is described as having warming allspice and damp embers.

The XOP Macallan 30 Years Old 1993 whisky features a nose of beautiful sherry aromas, including raisins, plums, figs, and citrus notes like lemon and orange peels. The palate offers dark chocolate with pepper and coffee, alongside toasted brioche, leather, and subtle dried fruits. The finish is long, with tannins, cloves, and orange marmalade.

A wine with the complexity of an Estate, of two varieties and three vintages, which were made separately and aged in Bordeaux barrels, later to be blended in large 1,200-litre open barrels, or Fudres. Château de Montfrin has been in Jean-René de Fleurieu’s family since 1925 when his grandfather purchased the château and the vineyards. Jean-René took over in 2004 and today is supported by his daughter Aurore and Estate Manager Benjamin Beguin in the operation of the winery and its 100 hectares of organically farmed vineyards. In addition to vineyards, the estate also has olive groves. Looking after the land is a love affair for Jean-René and Benjamin. This is where they grew up, established roots and feel at home. The vineyards are spread out and are located in four different appellations: Pont du Gard, Costières de Nîmes, Côtes du Rhône, and Côtes du Rhône Villages. The vines grow in hallowed farmland made up of contrasting terrain, from the vast silty soils of the plains along the majestic Rhône to the sunny hillside of its banks and the stony plateaus of its now abandoned riverbeds.
