The ninth installment in the Penderyn Icons of Wales series, aptly named 'The Headliner' in honour of David Lloyd George (1863-1945), the sole Welsh Prime Minister and architect of the Immature Spirits Act 1915, mandating a minimum three-year maturation period for whisky. On the nose, expect subtle hints of red berries, strawberries and cream, complemented by a touch of cranberries, light oak, and vanilla. The palate offers a rich and sweet experience, with flavors of dried fruits, salted caramel, floral honey, and a spicy note of black pepper, leading to a tannin-driven dry finish.

A blend of 90% rye-grain flavoring whisky with a variety of base whiskies. Its big whisky cocktails will tempt mixers into sipping. Very fruity and floral, with prunes, peaches, red apple skins, and bouquets of spring flowers all boosted by vibrant peppery spices on a slightly oaky base. Crown Royal’s signature balsam resin note and hints of vanilla round it out. The long, spicy finish ends with hints of citrus pith. A complex, tightly woven blend.

Nose: Buttery popcorn (a mix of salted and toffee coated), barbecued sweetcorn, and sticky Tarte Tatin are bolstered by a touch of rubber and charred mint.

Palate: Salted pretzels and cured meats lead the way, with oily malt and a touch of polished oak in tow.

Finish: Fresh leather and salted caramel are joined by drying spices and crackles of pepper.

Aromas of roasted grain and a hint of orchard fruit lead into an earthy, malty palate tinged with chamomile tea, oak and cinnamon, winding into a mild almond finish. This expression is part of Waterford Distillery's The Arcadian Series. Made using biodynamic barley, the spangly night-sky label refers to practice of using lunar cycles to guide farming. Released October 2021, with a limited edition of 21,000 bottles worldwide.

A bundle of wood—sawdust, pine forest, and wood spice—jumpstart the nose, though sweeter aromas of bundt cake, shea butter, malted milk balls, and chocolate milk soon join the fray. More chocolate lies on the heavenly palate, which sings with raspberry Ghirardelli squares, cocoa powder, Raisinets, mocha latte, and grape jelly. The finish keeps a good thing going: chocolate, fruit, and cinnamon spice linger on and on.

A no age statement Bunnahabhain destined to replace the existing 12 year old, matured in first and second-fill sherry casks. Raisins, fruit spice, furniture polish, and roasted nuts on the nose, along with an edge of brine. Rich and full-bodied in the mouth, with malt, sweet sherry, and cotton candy, plus cloves and a sprinkling of sea salt. The finish offers red berries, lively spice, and dark chocolate.

The result is a smooth and crisp tequila with notes of citrus, vanilla, and agave. It is perfect for sipping or mixing in cocktails. Cenote Tequila Blanco is a testament to the rich history and tradition of tequila-making in Mexico and is a must-try for any tequila enthusiast.

Antica Torino Amaro della Sacra is a bitter liqueur that is made using a blend of herbs, roots, and spices. It is produced in the Piedmont region of Italy, where it has been a popular drink for over a century. The liqueur has a deep amber color and a complex flavor profile that is both bitter and sweet. It is often enjoyed as an after-dinner digestif, and is said to aid in digestion. The recipe for Antica Torino Amaro della Sacra is a closely guarded secret, but it is known to contain ingredients such as gentian root, wormwood, and orange peel. The liqueur is typically served neat or on the rocks, and can also be used as a cocktail ingredient.

The Nicaragua Rum 1999 Sansibar 17 Year Old is a premium aged rum produced in Nicaragua by an undisclosed distillery and bottled by Sansibar, a German independent bottler. This rum was distilled in 1999 and aged for 17 years in oak casks, resulting in a rich and complex spirit with notes of vanilla, caramel, toasted oak, and spice. It is bottled at cask strength, without any artificial color or flavor additives. The Nicaragua Rum 1999 Sansibar 17 Year Old is a limited edition release with only a few thousand bottles produced.

Zuidam Distillery in the Netherlands produces a number of spirits including whisky and gin. This oak matured gin uses the same recipe as the distillery's regular dry gin focused on fresh citrus notes and small batch distillations.

From the Distillery: "Dutch Courage dry gin is distilled from Nine botanicals: juniper berries and iris root from Italy, coriander from Morocco, angelica, sweet oranges and fresh whole lemons from Spain, licorice root from India, cardamom and whole vanilla beans from Madagascar. The gin is distilled using a unique distillation method with the separate distillation of each botanical producing a fresh, complex and layered flavour from a total of 14 distillations."

The difference is that this dry gin is aged in new 200-litre American oak casks. This adds a layer of beguiling vanilla and spice to the still-fresh and fruity gin. The result of this is absolutely stunning.

Distiller's Tasting Notes: The nose is soft and mellow. It is balanced with fresh citrus and juniper notes and slightly sweet, soft and gentle vanilla and spices. The flavour is completely dry and fresh with a wonderful softness.

The Cadenhead Original Collection A Tennessee Distillery 18 years old is an American whisky from an undisclosed distillery in Tennessee. It was distilled in 2003 and matured in a barrel which was bottled on the 9th of Jun 2022 at 46% ABV, non chill filtered and with no added colour, as a limited release.

This delight is matured in ex-bourbon barrels for 3 years then finished in virgin Irish oak casks. Aromas and flavours of vanilla, spice, banana custard, with cinnamon, maple, citrus and oak tones. The palate is smooth with a spicy, warm lingering finish.

The finest Chivas 15-year-old whiskies are selected and finished in Cognac casks creating an elevated experience. The Glasgow Distillery Company has gone and distilled its whisky not once, not twice, but thrice! This is its Triple Distilled single malt Scotch whisky, which has been fully matured in virgin oak casks, and it gets bottled up at 46% ABV without any chill-filtration or additional colouring. It's got that traditional triple-distilled lightness to it, but packs plenty of complexity in there too.

Nose: Dried dark fruits with tropical undertones on the nose, followed by hints of biscuit, oak and freshly cut grass.

Palate: Sweet butterscotch with a crème brulee char on the pallet. Hints of freshly sliced pear, dried figs, dates and raisin with sweet almond, honey and creamy shortbread notes.

Finish: A long finish of thickly spread orange marmalade, nutmeg notes underpinned by complex woodiness and a slight spice.

Fresh wood barrel dominates the spirit with a touch of vanilla and flowers that lead to a breath of nectar. Maltose, a little bit tones of fruits citrus, Mizunara oak, coffee beans. Medium, woody, back to sweet aftertaste of maltose.

The flavor from alcohol is not that strong, compared to its labeled year, which tastes smooth and easy to drink. Award-winning : Shinobu Single Malt 10 Year spent most of its days in bourbon and sherry casks before it was transferred to Japanese Mizanura oak for a finish, imparting earthy, woody notes to the whisky.

A suitably well-rounded expression.

This spumante comes from marl and clay-sandy soil, in a precious area of “Alta Langa”, which Azienda Agricola Giribaldi became part of in 2013. In this area, for over a century, is where the pinot Nero e Chardonnay are grown to produce Spumante, which according to the piemontese tradition, is strictly produced using the metodo champenoise, of the second refermentation in the bottle.

The wine's dosage is finely balanced with the ripe fruits and textured fruits. This bottling is just the right age, poised between crispness and a more toasty edge. Drink this beautifully controlled Champagne now. Roger Voss
