Royal Salute, the prestigious blended whiskey brand under the stewardship of Pernod Ricard and operated by Chivas Brothers Holdings, was originally introduced in 1953 to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Recently, on May 17, 2023, a collection of new Royal Salute whiskey labels emerged online, unveiling an exquisite addition to the lineup: the Royal Salute 21 Year Old The Miami Polo Edition.

Exuding aromas of marshmallow and vanilla, this expression initially presents a restrained nose but unfolds with delightful sweetness reminiscent of peaches and cream, ripe banana, and circus peanuts candies. The collaboration with actor Matthew McConaughey maintains the characteristic earthiness of Wild Turkey, evident on the palate. Despite its modest proof, it delivers a warm sensation with ample oak tannins, making it a pleasant choice for sipping neat, on the rocks, or with water. A remarkable value pick.

The nose tickles with caramel, spice, vanilla, and earthiness, with just a hint of balsamic vinegar. Warming. Coated with spices, ranging from cinnamon to allspice and from coffee to nutmeg. Eventually, patented caramel and vanilla, with a fun hint of cardamom. The long, enjoyable finish is earthy, but there’s an unwanted bitterness at the end that cannot be denied. If not for the bitter end, this would rate much higher.

As with much of what passes for Japanese whisky, the spirit for this one was not produced in Japan, it was however matured there for at least some of its life. This "pure malt", a term no longer allowed in Scotland, means it is a blend of different single malts, or a Blended Malt. The sourced whiskies, almost certainly Scottish, where matured in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry before marrying and gfinishing in Mizunara, Japanese Oak. 43%.

Tasting Notes

Nose: salted caramel, raisins, dates and figs; firm new leather, fruity tobacco and candied nuts; chocolate covered espresso beans and Twizzlers black licorice.

Palate: round, fruity and spicy; more salted caramel, firm new leather, Twizzlers Black and salty Dutch licorice; a trace of juicy malt, dried dark fruits and more chocolate covered espresso; drying and spicy with more cinnamon sticks, ginger root and fennel.

Finish: medium long, coating, drying and spicy; elegant but subtle.

Comment: the Mizunara oak notes do not come through quite as prominently for me on the 15 as they did on the 10 year; this is a more mature, austere and understated malt.

The Oban Distillers Edition 2021 is a unique blend of flavors achieved by aging the whisky in ex-bodega Montilla Fino cask wood. Jack Daniel's is a brand of Tennessee whiskey, not just bourbon, produced at the oldest registered distillery in the United States. It is known for its unique charcoal mellowing process and is technically considered a bourbon due to its production methods, but it is specifically called Tennessee whiskey due to the additional mellowing step.

Milky white and scented with coconut, this liqueur is sweet and creamy on the palate, with plenty of coconut flavor. It's not as thick as some other cream liqueurs, which makes it relatively easy drinking. Ideal for mixing into piña colada-style drinks in place of coconut cream.

With its vintage-inspired packaging and nostalgic moniker, this Tennessee bourbon exudes an old-world charm despite its relatively recent debut in 2014. At six years of age, it delivers a delightful whiskey experience, boasting a rich caramel hue and enticing aroma redolent of sweet baking spices. On the palate, bold and invigorating tannins reminiscent of cigar box and menthol provide a satisfying counterpoint to the pronounced sweetness of orange jam and decadent long-stewed fruit. Kahlúa Coffee Flavoured Liqueur offers a rich and complex taste profile featuring strong coffee notes, blended with hints of vanilla, chocolate, and a touch of sweet butter. The aroma is characterized by freshly ground coffee, dark chocolate, and vanilla. The taste is lightly syrupy and sweet, with dark chocolate and coffee competing for prominence, complemented by strong vanilla and a faint smokiness. Cotton candy, marshmallows roasting over an open campfire, baked apples, and cornbread batter start a whiskey that then offers hints of caramel apples, pumpkin pie, and roasted pecans. Water opens it up to more nuanced fruit, spice, and sweetness. Without water, brown-sugar butter dominates about mid-palate and leads to a long finish. Dilution makes this a completely different whiskey experience.

The 10th release in Bruichladdich's impressive limited-edition Black Art series is an enigmatic, mysterious 29-year-old whisky. Shrouded in darkness, its cask recipe is known only by Bruichladdich's head distiller and its character is spicy, complex and unlike any other Black Art expression. Aromas of chocolate praline, toasted oak, apricot jam, black cherries, honey-covered gooseberries and honeysuckle fill the nose, complemented by notes of gingernut biscuits, lemon meringue pie, marzipan, raisins, plums, vanilla and cinnamon throughout the palate, fading to ripe peaches, tobacco and ginger lingering in the finish.
