As if visiting a First Growth Bordeaux château and tasting the wares, including pristinely cellared library vintages, wasn't awesome enough, the folks at Lafite-Rothschild take the experience one step further. For many years, they have treated esteemed guests and friends to rare and impeccable old Cognac and Armagnac casks individually selected by the Lafite winemaking team themselves. While the secret was well-kept for decades, word eventually got out and demand for these ultra-rare, premium spirits started to reach a fever pitch. Thankfully, the château took it upon themselves to release a few precious bottles each year into the market, and we were recently lucky enough to get our hands on a miniscule allocation. The Très Vieille Réserve Cognac is constructed from lots of at least 50 years in age and sourced from Grande Champagne and Borderies. Quite simply, the opportunity to own a bottle of this unicorn spirit is a gateway into one of the most exclusive clubs in the world.

A second, though equally precious release from the cellars of Lafite Rothschild is this venerable Bas Armagnac, produced from 70% Baco and 30% Ugni Blanc and composed of material aged between thirty and forty-two years. Like the Tres Vieille Reserve Cognac, the Vieille Reserve Armagnac has been part of a way of life at Rothschilds for decades where it's a family tradition to serve the finest spirits to friends and relations. More recently Lafite were cajoled into making these spirits available outside of close family circles.

Working with a small number of vignerons and distillers and with advice from Armagnac specialists, the Lafite team select well-aged "pieces" (casks in Armagnac) classified among the finest the appellation has to offer. The idea is simply to express "the best for Lafite". Style, continuity and a desire to do things slightly differently result in a blend from multiple harvests. The current composition was sourced from the Darroze family's stocks. They remain the watchful and patient custodians of 250 Armagnacs, including more than 50 vintages spanning a century, most sourced from the western portion of the Bas-Armagnac region. The family is highly respected on their home ground and abroad (uber wine critic, Robert Parker named Francois Darroze,“the Pope of Armagnac”). Together with son Marc, they continue to roam the best estates and terroirs in search of the most distinctive brandies. Arriving with Lafite's seal of approval in a handsome oak box and wax-sealed antique bottle, this is guaranteed to be one the most impressive examples money can buy. TASTING NOTES
A very complex and concentrated interpretation of Tempranillo, complemented by 15% Merlot. The grapes come from a single vineyard at the foot of Sierra Cantabria with an elevation of 700 meters. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in stainless steel with a 20-day maceration. This is followed by barrel aging in French for 14 months. The colour of the wine is an inviting bright red with hints of purple. The aroma is full of ripe fruit with a hint of almond skin and aromatic herbs. The palate has a beautiful mouth-feel with soft tannins, complex yet smooth and an underlying touch of well-integrated oak aging. A lively acidity provides balance, leading into a harmonious, long finish.

A small portion, about 12%, of the blend is made up of Viura to add a touch of lightness to the full-bodied Tempranillo that makes up the majority of this cuvée. The Tempranillo grapes are fermented in the winery's traditional carbonic maceration method in open concrete vats, resulting in a very fruit-forward wine with soft, well-integrated tannins. Maturing the wine in concrete vats for several months adds surprising depth and complexity. The grapes are from 40-year old vines. In the glass there is an inviting dark cherry colour with purple tinges. The aroma is expressive and refreshing with hints of violets, strawberries, and aromatic herbs. The finish is well rounded and elegant.

In 2006, Don Julio, with his family, planted their final agave field. In honor of his devotion and craftsmanship, this agave harvest was carefully distilled, barreled, and set aside for a special use. To preserve this tequila and the exquisite agave piñas behind it, we have implemented a Solera aging system. The Solera aging method combines and matures tequilas of different characteristics finished in unique casks, allowing the final agave harvest to remain at the heart of this rare Extra Añejo Tequila. Don Mateo de la Sierra Manso de Sahuayo is produced using Agave Americana var. Manso de Sahuayo (formerly known as Cenizo). This agave is endemic to the municipality of Sahuayo, Michoacan.

This spirit features smoky tones with a pleasant permanence in the mouth, slight minerality, and hints of aromatic field flowers. Made from Cupreata and Manso Sahuayo agave species aged 6-8 years, it hails from El Limon and La Calzonuda. The agave is cooked in a conical volcanic stone oven, crushed with a roller mill, fermented in oak wood tubs embedded in the ground, and distilled using a Philippine still with a wooden cap and copper pot.

Don Mateo Pechuga offers a pure taste of Michoacan, crafted from maguey Cenizo or Cupreata, unlike most exported pechuga mezcals made with maguey Espadin. During the third distillation, Emilio Vieyra’s mother adds her special recipe, including chicken breast, deer meat, and select spices, giving the mezcal a fuller, richer taste. It features a nose of roasted agave, tropical fruits, citrus, earthy notes, and spice, with a great texture and weight on the palate. Some batches may use different meats instead of chicken.

Donkiesbaai Steen is a premium, dry South African Chenin Blanc produced by the Engelbrecht family (Rust en Vrede) using old, dry-land farmed bush vines (approx. 40 years old) from Piekenierskloof. It is known for its intense fruity aroma—pineapple, lemon meringue, and peach—combined with a creamy texture, vibrant acidity, and notes of toasted almond or butterscotch. 

Nose: Rich and sweet with notes of toffee, honey, and vanilla. Hints of dried fruits and a subtle spiciness.

Taste: Smooth and creamy with flavors of caramel, butterscotch, and dark chocolate. A touch of cinnamon and nutmeg adds warmth and complexity.

Palate: Full-bodied and luscious, with a velvety mouthfeel. The sweetness continues, accompanied by flavors of raisins, figs, and a gentle oakiness. The finish is long and satisfying, with a lingering sweetness and a hint of spice.

Douglas Laing's The Gauldrons Cask Strength is a limited-edition, non-chill filtered Campbeltown blended malt bottled at high ABV (often ~52.8%–53.4%). It features a robust maritime, smoky, and sweet profile, delivering notes of sea spray, caramel, manuka honey, and gentle peat smoke, reflecting its "bay of storms" namesake.
