It’s a brave person who tries to persuade a malt like Lagavulin to go into a different direction. Indeed, even PX casks, from the sweetest fortified wine of all, can’t fully obscure the distillery’s character, just give it a raisined coating. The creosote turns to tar and licorice, while there’s Syrah-like sootiness, and damson. This release is slightly less sweet than in the past and is the better for it, though I still prefer my Lagavulin relatively ‘naked.’

Grapes grown on the slope from north to southwest are at altitudes of 450-1050 meters above sea level. Benanti is the only winery that has vineyards located on every slope of the DOC Etna. The Dafara Galluzza vineyard is located on the prestigious north slope of Etna, at 750 metres asl, it is extremely suited to growing Nerello Mascalese. The nose is fine, heady, spicy, with measures of red fruit. The palate is chewy and intense, yet vibrant and surprisingly light on its feet. Sour cherry mingles with wood, chocolate and earth, then a lingering spicy finish.

Aged in a mix of American white oak barrels, oloroso casks, and cabernet sauvignon barriques. Sherry, vanilla, caramel, ripe cherries, and sultanas on the nose. The palate yields characteristic Dalmore orange, plus brittle toffee, bitter chocolate, and cherry liqueur. Spicy licorice and soft oak in the finish.

Extraordinarily aromatic, with notes of overripe banana, green papaya, molasses, toasted almond, and fermented mango. The palate offers more decadent notes of milk chocolate and spiced figs, but not without a peppery kick and touch of funk that this distillery is known for. Outstanding.

The warehouses at Glenora are not heated, so aging virtually stops in winter. Thus, the whisky doesn’t reach its peak until its mid-teens. By then, it is malty, fresh, crisp, and grassy, with hints of vanilla and delicate, slightly bitter fruits, including apricots and citrus pith. From the Brandini winery, Alta Langa is a DOCG with Methode Champenois style sparkling wine. These beautiful wines spend 48 months on the lees, making the ageing longer than even Champagne. The aromas of bread crust perfectly blend with floral notes and hints of candied fruit. The perlage is fine with a great acidity and a long-lingering finish. Champagne flavour at a fraction of the price!

Bright golden appearance shot through with amber highlights. A delightfully refined Rivesaltes with a classy bouquet of soft caramel, stewed apples, pears, nuts and an overriding impression of completeness. Round and elegant on the palate, with a Margaux like understated sophistication. Unmistakeable rancio characters help to place this in a blind tasting, but this is preceeded by impressions of butterscotch, walnut fudge, soft brown sugar and a little treacle. Very gentle on the long length with a pleasing warmth that lingers long after the wine has disappeared.

The 2001 Léoville Las Cases is a vintage I’ve encountered many times. Now at two decades old, it has a generous nose with those black plums still in situ, along with graphite and cedar; this bottle is a little more backward, probably due to the provenance. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, white pepper and sage and fine grip. Though it’s not as precise or chiseled as recent vintages, there is admirable complexity on the lightly peppered, tobacco- and rooibos-tinged finish. Excellent. 2021 - 2050

Santa Cristina Casasole Orvieto Classico is a light straw yellow, slightly sweet (
) white wine from Umbria, Italy, typically blending Procanico and Grechetto grapes. It offers intense aromas of banana, green apple, citrus, and orange blossom. Featuring 12.5% ABV, it is fresh, balanced, and ideal for pairing with light meals, seafood, and fruit desserts.

Bacardi Spiced Rum, bottled at 35% ABV, is a bold yet smooth blend of aged and unaged rum rested in charred American oak barrels. Mike Grgich first gained international recognition at the celebrated Paris Tasting of 1976. This historic tasting gave the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay, crafted by Mike Grgich, first place as the finest white wine in the world. After this solid recognition, he started Grgich Hills winery in Rutherford Hills. 2023 marks the 100th birthday of this iconic producer who is a legend in Napa Valley. This Cabernet offers black currant and ripe black cherries, followed by forest floor and bay leaf and vanilla undertones. Bright acidity, and youthful tannins are evident; no doubt this wine has the ability to age.

From the Bolgheri DOC, the Poggio Al Tesoro is owned by the Allegrini family of Valpolicella fame. Named after the Seggio river that crosses the vineyard, it is a blend of 50% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot. The nose exhibits lovely fresh, crunchy fruit, enriched with mineral and spicy notes. The palate is medium bodied with hints of red berries and elegant silky tannins. A great wine for the price point!
