“The 2016 Latour showed in stunning fashion out of barrel. Bottled in July 2018, it has retained a very deep, almost opaque color. The utterly beguiling bouquet features blackberry, graphite, crushed rose petals and a touch of licorice, though this ebbs with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with such fine tannins that the power and backbone of this Latour are barely registered by the senses. There is bewitching symmetry here, and incredible length, plus a persistency on the finish that is enthralling. Is it a perfect Latour like the best bottles of the 1928, 1961, 1982, 2000 and 2010? I think it might be. The 13.5% alcohol is a whole percentage point less than the 2010, making it more approachable. Drink 2023-2060"

Valbuena is the purest expression of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) from Vega Sicilia, where Tinto Fino dominates the blend, complemented by Merlot, the proportion of which varies depending on the vintage. The Tempranillo comes from plots on gentle concave slopes, with soils rich in eroded material and deep calcic horizons. Valbuena showcases the greatness of this terroir, with each vintage uniquely influenced by the year's weather, providing an authentic and consistent representation of the land. Its production process remains unchanged, allowing the natural variations of each harvest to shine through.

This is a full-bodied oak matured red with with ripe plum, red fruits and complex perfumed oak bouquet. A concentrated middle palate with a long after taste of blackberries and undertones of spice. Good to drink now, but will continue to improve for the next 3-5 years.  Pairs easily with beef, lamb or even wild game such as venison.

A high percentage (75%) of new wood has given this wine a very fine polished character. Along with the structure, it has brought out impressive aromas of black fruits, cinnamon spice and power. The wine is has a fresh black-fruit aftertaste.

This wine is light in colour, featuring spicy, floral, cherry, and licorice aromas. It opens with a dry, savoury attack with sour cherry, smoky, peppery, and celery salt notes, complemented by soft and round tannins. The wine is named in honour of former owner John Xavier Merriman, who bought the vineyard in 1892 in sympathy with growers suffering from the phylloxera crisis. He played a great role in revitalizing Rustenberg and in promoting the tourism and agricultural value of Ida's valley, which is close to Stellenbosch. The wine itself is a Bourdeaux-style blend, with all of the fruit coming from the Estate. Made predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the dominant grape in each bottle is whichever grape performed the best for that harvest.
