This U.S.-exclusive release was initially aged in first-fill American oak sherry casks before a period of finishing in cognac casks. This Lambic has been infused with 30% pure raspberry juice giving it a dark pink colour with a creamy pink foam – it also gives the beer a very big punch of fresh raspberries on both the nose and palate. Although there is some extra complexity under the fruit, it is quite subtle. This beer has a very alive carbonation feel with a refreshing finish and just a touch of sweetness to draw you back for more.

Koval was founded in Chicago in 2008 by Dr. Sonat Birnecker Hart and her husband, Dr. Robert Birnecker. The distillery was the first to open in the city since the mid-1800s. The word ‘koval’ means ‘smith’ or ‘blacksmith’ in many Eastern languages, but in Yiddish it also means ‘one who forges ahead’. Koval pays homage to Sonat’s grandfather who decided to “forge ahead” and move to the USA and start a new life from scratch. These products are all made organically and with a “grain to glass” philosophy, the distillery believes in only offering high-quality, well-made spirits using state-of-the-art technology.

The unique mash bill of 51 per cent corn and 49 per cent millet offers a smooth and balanced bourbon with notes of mango chutney, vanilla, and peppery caramel. This bourbon is best enjoyed neat or on the rocks to appreciate these unique tasting notes.

Torres 10 has a dark topaz colour with hues of gold. Intense aroma with warm hints of cinnamon and vanilla. Complete and persistent finish with aromatic notes of oak.

El Tequileno Gran Reserva Reposado is a premium tequila that is aged for a minimum of eight months in oak barrels. This process gives the tequila a smooth and complex flavor profile with notes of vanilla, caramel, and oak. The tequila is made from 100% blue Weber agave, which is grown in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. The agave is harvested by hand and cooked in traditional brick ovens before being distilled in copper pot stills. The result is a tequila that is rich and full-bodied, with a long and satisfying finish. El Tequileno Gran Reserva Reposado is perfect for sipping neat or for use in premium cocktails.

As with much of what passes for Japanese whisky, the spirit for this one was not produced in Japan, it was however matured there for at least some of its life. This "pure malt", a term no longer allowed in Scotland, means it is a blend of different single malts, or a Blended Malt. The sourced whiskies, almost certainly Scottish, where matured in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry before marrying and gfinishing in Mizunara, Japanese Oak. 43%.

Tasting Notes

Nose: salted caramel, raisins, dates and figs; firm new leather, fruity tobacco and candied nuts; chocolate covered espresso beans and Twizzlers black licorice.

Palate: round, fruity and spicy; more salted caramel, firm new leather, Twizzlers Black and salty Dutch licorice; a trace of juicy malt, dried dark fruits and more chocolate covered espresso; drying and spicy with more cinnamon sticks, ginger root and fennel.

Finish: medium long, coating, drying and spicy; elegant but subtle.

Comment: the Mizunara oak notes do not come through quite as prominently for me on the 15 as they did on the 10 year; this is a more mature, austere and understated malt.

Louis-Alexandre had a love for aged cognac. His own preference was to add an extra drop of Cognac to his glass of Grand Marnier, giving it a more intense taste. The Oban Distillers Edition 2021 is a unique blend of flavors achieved by aging the whisky in ex-bodega Montilla Fino cask wood.
