Unbenownst to many, the country of Moldova is one of the world's oldest with the largest collection - over 2 million bottles, as well as the largest underground cellar used for storage of wines. This cuvee has 60% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Blanc and 10% Pinot Noir for a soft wine with complex citrus flavours and nuances of peach.

The wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks to preserve the fresh and fruity character of the grape variety. On the nose, the wine exhibits aromas of red cherry, raspberry, and a hint of spice. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, with soft tannins and a good balance of acidity. Flavors of red fruits, black tea, and a hint of oak are present. This wine is a great pairing with roasted meats, grilled vegetables, and medium-aged cheeses.

Buckle up. Bushmills Single Malt Whiskey 16 year old is truly one of the great whiskeys of the world. Aged for about 15 years in a combination of Oloroso Sherry and bourbon-seasoned casks, and then finished for about 9 months in port wine pipes (large barrels unique to making port wine.) This single malt shows its layers of flavor, juicy fruits, nuts and spice, as well as a hint of ruby redness. It’s best enjoyed neat. Okay, maybe one small cube of ice to open it up.

Torres 10 has a dark topaz colour with hues of gold. Intense aroma with warm hints of cinnamon and vanilla. Complete and persistent finish with aromatic notes of oak.

Montes Purple Angel is a premium red wine from Chile that is made from a blend of Carmenere and Petit Verdot grapes. This wine is known for its deep purple color and intense aromas of black fruit, spices, and vanilla. On the palate, it is full-bodied with a rich and complex flavor profile that includes notes of blackberry, plum, chocolate, and tobacco. The tannins are firm and well-structured, providing a long and elegant finish. This wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, which adds a subtle touch of oak and enhances its complexity. Montes Purple Angel is a perfect wine to pair with grilled meats, hearty stews, and strong cheeses.

As with much of what passes for Japanese whisky, the spirit for this one was not produced in Japan, it was however matured there for at least some of its life. This "pure malt", a term no longer allowed in Scotland, means it is a blend of different single malts, or a Blended Malt. The sourced whiskies, almost certainly Scottish, where matured in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry before marrying and gfinishing in Mizunara, Japanese Oak. 43%.

Tasting Notes

Nose: salted caramel, raisins, dates and figs; firm new leather, fruity tobacco and candied nuts; chocolate covered espresso beans and Twizzlers black licorice.

Palate: round, fruity and spicy; more salted caramel, firm new leather, Twizzlers Black and salty Dutch licorice; a trace of juicy malt, dried dark fruits and more chocolate covered espresso; drying and spicy with more cinnamon sticks, ginger root and fennel.

Finish: medium long, coating, drying and spicy; elegant but subtle.

Comment: the Mizunara oak notes do not come through quite as prominently for me on the 15 as they did on the 10 year; this is a more mature, austere and understated malt.

Paddy's Irish Whiskey: 91 Points, Ultimate Spirits Challenge 2022: "A fresh and lively Irish whisky with aromas of warm cereal, chocolate-covered orange, honeysuckle, and white tea leaves. "LVNAE is named after the ancient "Portus Lunae" (the Port of the moon), one of the most important cities and ports of the ancient Roman Empire. It was established in 1966 by Paolo Bosoni, who transformed the winery by combining farming wisdom and business acumen. He is now joined by his children Debora and Diego. Lunae currently represents the largest winery in Liguria with an annual total production of approx. 780,000 bottles and a total of 85Ha. 50Ha are family-owned vineyards in the hills of Luni and Castelnuovo Magra and, in part, on the plain surrounding the ruins of the ancient city of Luni. 15Ha are on long-term leases and the other 20ha are from approximately 150 local growers who, supported by the company's technical staff, contribute their small grape production, keeping alive traditions and the unique quality of the wine.
The focus is on Vermentino which is distinguished by a selection of different vines and vinification and perfectly reflects the nature of the soil and unique climate which favors crisp, acidic, mineral whites and fruity, fresh reds. The red wines are Sangiovese-based blended with local varietals such as Massareta, Pollera Nera and Sangiovese (Sangiovese is very widespread in this area due to its proximity to Tuscany - 2 km only to the border)."
