Austin Hope grew up working alongside his father, inheriting his love and respect for the region. He led the family’s move into winemaking in 1995, and further exploration of Paso Robles began. In 2000, Austin created his own label, with very small productions of Rhône varietals because of the similarity in terroir. Today, Austin is showcasing an even greater sweep of Paso Robles and expressing a similar richness with a recently released Cabernet Sauvignon. The source of the wine is far-reaching within the appellation - a most discerning group of vineyards located on gently sloping hillsides and hidden pockets across the domain, providing dimension to the Cabernet varietal. The wine has a bold structure of lush, velvety tannins and an unmistakable elegance. It is dark, ripe and well suited to various beef dishes.

This non-vintage Rose is the end result of a desire to create a Rose champagne with a delightfully luscious, fruit-based charm. Jacques Peters, the cellarmaster, and his team wanted a champagne that would be accessible and naturally engaging while conserving Veuve Clicquot's essential values in terms of style.

On the palate, bold and invigorating tannins reminiscent of cigar box and menthol provide a satisfying counterpoint to the pronounced sweetness of orange jam and decadent long-stewed fruit. Red fruit and allspice aromas lead into a big, punchy palate. Each sip opens rich, with smoked cherry, vanilla bean, dried fig and chocolate-covered caramels. It finishes dry, with cigar wrapper, leather and a hint of clove. To be clear, the effect is dry but never austere: think comfy leather chairs and indulgent cigars. Finished in a variety of sherry casks.

Koval was founded in Chicago in 2008 by Dr. Sonat Birnecker Hart and her husband, Dr. Robert Birnecker. The distillery was the first to open in the city since the mid-1800s. The word ‘koval’ means ‘smith’ or ‘blacksmith’ in many Eastern languages, but in Yiddish it also means ‘one who forges ahead’. Koval pays homage to Sonat’s grandfather who decided to “forge ahead” and move to the USA and start a new life from scratch. These products are all made organically and with a “grain to glass” philosophy, the distillery believes in only offering high-quality, well-made spirits using state-of-the-art technology.

The unique mash bill of 51 per cent corn and 49 per cent millet offers a smooth and balanced bourbon with notes of mango chutney, vanilla, and peppery caramel. This bourbon is best enjoyed neat or on the rocks to appreciate these unique tasting notes.

As with much of what passes for Japanese whisky, the spirit for this one was not produced in Japan, it was however matured there for at least some of its life. This "pure malt", a term no longer allowed in Scotland, means it is a blend of different single malts, or a Blended Malt. The sourced whiskies, almost certainly Scottish, where matured in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry before marrying and gfinishing in Mizunara, Japanese Oak. 43%.

Tasting Notes

Nose: salted caramel, raisins, dates and figs; firm new leather, fruity tobacco and candied nuts; chocolate covered espresso beans and Twizzlers black licorice.

Palate: round, fruity and spicy; more salted caramel, firm new leather, Twizzlers Black and salty Dutch licorice; a trace of juicy malt, dried dark fruits and more chocolate covered espresso; drying and spicy with more cinnamon sticks, ginger root and fennel.

Finish: medium long, coating, drying and spicy; elegant but subtle.

Comment: the Mizunara oak notes do not come through quite as prominently for me on the 15 as they did on the 10 year; this is a more mature, austere and understated malt.

The Oban Distillers Edition 2021 is a unique blend of flavors achieved by aging the whisky in ex-bodega Montilla Fino cask wood. Caol Ila 12 year old is the entry-level bottling from the Caol Ila distillery, launched in June of 2002 this expression is light and fresh with that distinctive Caol Ila smoke.

This wine features aromas of red cherry, violet and talcum powder. In the mouth there are flavors of tart cherry and pomegranate juice. It is well balanced, with a pleasantly acidic finish.

Golden yellow in the glass, this sparkling wine has aromas of yeast, apple and freshly baked bread. It is slightly oxidized, with flavors of brioche and apple cider on the palate.

Garnet red veering towards purple. Expressive, with creamy notes of black fruits such as blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry and sweet spices. Slender in the mouth, prolonged by a fine acidity, but wrapped up in a round, velvety and charming matter. Combines blackberry cream with toasted spices and vanilla. The finish is tonic, with a substance that gains in concentration and tannins. Harmonious, coherent, well balanced.

BLACKENED Whiskey celebrates Metallica’s much-anticipated new album with the Limited Edition 72 Seasons Batch, using the album in the sonic-enhancement process. This limited-edition bottle features elements inspired by the album, including a striking yellow capsule with the signature Metallica M and the 72 Seasons logo prominently displayed on the front. “It’s kind of like we’re bottling key Metallica memories with these limited-release batches. The 10th release in Bruichladdich's impressive limited-edition Black Art series is an enigmatic, mysterious 29-year-old whisky. Shrouded in darkness, its cask recipe is known only by Bruichladdich's head distiller and its character is spicy, complex and unlike any other Black Art expression. Aromas of chocolate praline, toasted oak, apricot jam, black cherries, honey-covered gooseberries and honeysuckle fill the nose, complemented by notes of gingernut biscuits, lemon meringue pie, marzipan, raisins, plums, vanilla and cinnamon throughout the palate, fading to ripe peaches, tobacco and ginger lingering in the finish.

An aroma of oak smoke and flavors of black pepper and blackberries dominate this full-bodied, chunky and moderately tannic wine. It's a little rough edged, but nicely robust and flavorful.

Milky white and scented with coconut, this liqueur is sweet and creamy on the palate, with plenty of coconut flavor. It's not as thick as some other cream liqueurs, which makes it relatively easy drinking. Ideal for mixing into piña colada-style drinks in place of coconut cream.

Frappato is a light coloured red grape produced all over Sicily, but mainly in the southeast corner. It is typically blended with Nero d'Avola to help soften the tannins (like in Cerasuolo di Vittorio). By itself though, it bursts with aromas of sweet red berries and incense spice. Light in alcohol, but with beautiful texture and acidity, it's a juicy, lively alternative to white wines of the patio for summer. Serve chilled!

The Charles Heidsieck Brut 2012 is a vintage champagne made by one of the oldest and most prestigious houses in Champagne.
